August 29 to 7 September IX Across the wide open plains

The Prairies stretch to the horizon a mix of all shades of gold and green depending on crops ripening or harvested and simply grassland. Here and there water soaks, many dry, punctuate the fields; it's irrigation-related I believe and we saw the huge irrigation units we see in northern Victoria. The weather was glorious and I can only imagine what it must look like covered by a thick blanket of snow. Would be wonderful to see. The ground started to become more and more undulating as the days wore on until the next morning we awoke in Jasper surrounded by towering mountains. The down side of continuous train travel - the bits that whizz by while you slumber completely replete after delicious evening meals !
We had a longish stop in Saskatoon. Love that name! So I strolled the length of the train - 21 cars! This promo on the side of the train I found enticing. The train travels north to Hudson’s Bay and all that glorious ice and snow and wild life! One day maybe. Incidentally Saskatoon gets its name from the native berry.

Remember this pic? I tracked down what these berries are - Saskatoon berries. Saskatoon takes its name from these berries which are native to the area.  ‘Saskatoon berries’ derives from the Cree word misâskwatômina meaning Saskatoon berries!! Simples😁

This is the bullet car where the prestige passengers hand out. It is so very retro.

Each car has a name - we were in Brant Manor. There’s Lindsay scratching to be let out.

I think this might be canola. Why I wonder do they always leave uncut strips between harvested patches?

Lunch that day was a bison burger! Delicious.
