A few days in Toronto and we are doing the full touristy bit with a trip to Niagara Falls and a city tour. Niagara Falls! It is one of the ultimate tourist destinations - an astonishing 13 million visitors a year. But the falls are truly amazing! Like all waterfalls this monstrous double cascade is the result of erosion over a very very long time and is still eroding at a rate of one metre per year.
It’s huge - 170 million litres of water go over the edge every minute. It’s actually two falls divided by an island which is in US territory - the US-Canadian border runs down the centre of the Niagara river. So there are the American falls and the Canadian, Horseshoe falls. It’s staggering, quite mesmerising to watch and quite awe inspiring being up close.
We ended the day at the Niagara College Teaching Winery tasting local wines including the special Ice wine made from frozen grapes.
Hard to comprehend the volume of water thundering over the edge.
Tucked in on the left is a boat heading towards the falls. We were to take that boat an hour or so later!
American falls on the left, Canadian Horseshoe falls on the right. I love the cloud riding from the base of the falls. Gives you an inkling of the power in that water. Incidentally half of what originally went over these falls is now diverted to generate electricity.
Funicular down to the river to catch that boat.
Cute eh! We all looked like red jelly babies in our ponchos.
The clouds had me snapping.
We got drenched. I could hardly hold my phone - it and my hands were slick with spray. Absolutely amazing experience!
This was like Las Vegas - not that I’ve been there mind but it was a wall to wall tourist town.
The view from where we had lunch. The food was average but the view!
