July 14 Riding the El!

I don’t know how many of you are  V. I. Warshawski fans but if you’ve read any of Sara Paretsky’s novels you’re bound to have fallen in love with VI who was always jumping on the El - and running along the lake shore. Of course the El or ‘L’  is the elevated rail loop in Downtown Chicago.

For those of you yet to discover Sara Paretsky, she is an American author of detective fiction, best known for her novels focused on the female protagonist V I Warshawski. Sara is a woman of a perfect age (1947) received the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame’s Fuller Award for lifetime achievement. Well deserved. As avid readers we simply had to ride the El.

The Loop, the El, was born when they ran out of room on the streets so the rails went up. Great solution!

  1. I love that the rails went UP with no room on the busy streets. I saw this option over and over in Europe also for the reason that arable land, townships and lifestyle should not be disturbed when roads and rail can be built UP. It cuts out some sunlight but that happens with tunnels and tall buildings anyway. I guess it's all due to available $$$ and priorities.
