October 9 McKenzie River Rainforest walk - almost!

A delightful face in the green undergrowth

Fruiting moss I love

Native violets everywhere.

This trail traces through eucalypt as well as rain forests and crosses near the junction of the McKenzie and Bemm rivers. Disappointingly the start of the walk displayed a sign ‘closed due to bushfires’.  We did sneak a little way in through the wet eucalypt forest to have a wee look and saw a number of flowers and some regeneration. Sadly we didn’t get to the thick of the rainforest as the boardwalk was severely fire-damaged. There seems to have been little activity/repair/maintenance in the parks in east Gippsland managed by Parks Vic even their offices are closed so getting information about closures or anything else is almost impossible. They are however doing aerial shooting of deer which means they close vast swathes of forest for weeks. However .....

This suspension bridge spanned the McKenzie river  just a wee bit upstream of the Bemm River

It was pretty sad to see.

I read all the story/information boards as I walk and have learnt, or been reminded of, so much.  We’ve visited both warm and cool temperate rainforest and the plants fascinate me. Ferns and ancient species, liverworts and flowers and plants that are stimulated to grow by fire or smoke.

I’ll leave you to browse some of our finds ... enjoy
