February 9 - heading to the back of Bourke

Heading east to Bourke from Tibooburra via the Wanarring road, we took a punt that the rain had not caused any serious problems. It hadn’t thankfully. So strange but wonderful to see water along the road and in temporary ‘dams’. The roads were red dust - our favourite - and some were corrugated (not so favoured!) but now the roads were bordered by tall trees. So obviously the area gets a substantial amount of rain. But not sufficient to impact the poor old Darling where we found freshwater clams embedded in the mud along the banks of the ‘trickle’. There was some flooding in places along the road but it was not deep enough to be a problem. I hasten to add that in some patches we only discovered that once we had driven through! One stretch looked deeper than the rest but there weren’t any markers to indicate how deep. We did however see wheel tracks on both sides of the water near the tree-line so we put the beast into low gear and chugged on through. Our car is awesome - and so is its driver. Me? Well I just hand out encouragement and directions - “this way, no that way, faster, don’t stop, keep it going. Hooray!”

And then we hit Bourke. What contrasts! We finally pulled into Kidman Camp, which is in North Bourke on the other side of the Darling River. It is like an oasis after the desert. Shade, green - and two cool pools! We washed and soaked and rehydrated - it was heavenly. We have stayed at Kidman Camp many times over the years and just love it.

Red dust and corrigations

We drove through a little water but not enough to get into the van

There are always lots of birds so someone is very happy. The gorgeous dainty Yellow-throated Miners, as well as a family of Magpies came calling every day. One cheeky little guy actually hopped right into the van while we were in it! and had a bit of a look round. So cute!
